Peptide YY, neuropeptide Y, and control of digestion THE PAMCREATIC-POLYPEPTIDE FAMILY OF PEPTIDES: THEIR ROLE IN THE BRAIN- GUT AXIS

چکیده
• In this volume of Biomedical Reviews, Rogers and Hermann (1) present an interesting model for the regulation of gastrointestinal function by two peptides, neuropeptide Y (NPY), and peptide YY (PYY), both of which belong to a related group of peptides known as the pancreatic polypeptide (PP)-fold family of peptides. In this review, largely of their own innovative work, they develop the hypothesis that PYY, acting as a humoral (hormonal) agent, may be a maj or inhibitory factor in the regulation of the upper gastrointestinal tract. In contrast, NPY would appear to be a maj or excitatory transmitter. How can two structurally homologous peptides produce such divergent actions?

Neuropeptide Y, peptide YY and pancreatic polypeptide in the gut–brain axis
The gut-brain axis refers to the bidirectional communication between the gut and the brain. Four information carriers (vagal and spinal afferent neurons, immune mediators such as cytokines, gut hormones and gut microbiota-derived signalling molecules) transmit information from the gut to the brain, while autonomic neurons and neuroendocrine factors carry outputs from the brain to the gut. The m...
متن کاملThe role of the neuropeptide Y (NPY) family in the pathophysiology of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) includes three main disorders: ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, and microscopic colitis. The etiology of IBD is unknown and the current treatments are not completely satisfactory. Interactions between the gut neurohormones and the immune system are thought to play a pivot role in inflammation, especially in IBD. These neurohormones are believed to include me...
متن کاملThe gut-mood axis: a novel role of the gut hormone peptide YY on emotional-affective behaviour in mice
Background Peptide YY (PYY) and neuropeptide Y (NPY) are members of the PP-fold peptide family. PYY is expressed by endocrine cells of the gut, whereas NPY occurs in enteric, sensory, cerebral and autonomic neurons. While PYY is involved in the regulation of gut function and satiety, NPY is known to contribute to the regulation of emotionalaffective behaviour, cognition, seizure activity, pain ...

Eating disorders such as anorexia (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) are characterized by abnormal eating behavior. The essential aspect of AN is that the individual refuses to maintain a minimal normal body weight. The main features of BN are binge eating and inappropriate compensatory methods to prevent weight gain. The gut-brain-adipose tissue (AT) peptides and neutralizing autoantibodies play an...
متن کاملEffect of an Acute Incremental Exercise on Plasma Peptide YY, Neuropeptide Y and IGF-1 Concentrations in Young Athletes
This study aims to determine the effect of a single exhausting exercise on plasma PYY, NPY and IGF-1 in young athletes. Thirty-one young athletes (aged 19.52±2.75 years, body mass 79.24±16.13 kg, height 173±6.49 cm, and body fat 16.37±5.92%) volunteered to participate in this study. The participations, in randomized crossover manner, performed a single exercise bout on a cycle ergometer at 50...
